All over north Pakistan there are rock carvings of ibex, such as these. Clearly they were very important to hunters in the past, but no-one is quite sure what purpose these carvings held. I'm sorry to say it but my suspicion is that the hunters carved them to leave a record of the wildlife that had existed in the mountains before they shot it all. Guns are widespread and much wildlife has been decimated by overhunting. Although I looked hard I didn't see any wild mammals larger than a weasel in my whole time in the Karakorum.
